Homemade honey butter in 5 minutes or less! You need just three basic ingredients (and Iโ€™d bet you can guess what at least two of them are ๐Ÿ˜‰)! Recipe includes a how-to video!

    Ready in 5 Minutes

If you happen to have a little butter, a little honey, and a little salt on hand then youโ€™re just 5 minutes away from one of my favorite quick & easy recipes. Homemade honey butter is incredibly simple to make and it elevates anything you add it to.

Perfect for smearing on everything from homemade bread or biscuits to cornbread, or crepes, it adds a lovely, richly flavored sweetness to anything you pair it with.

Without further ado, letโ€™s get to this super simple recipe.

    What You Need

    Honey butter ingredients.
    Butter, honey, and salt.

This recipe is as simple as it gets! Hereโ€™s what I use!

    • Butter. Make sure itโ€™s softened to room temperature so that it creams nicely with the honey. Since this โ€œrecipeโ€ has only three ingredients, I recommend using the best quality you can find of each. Regular or generic butter will work, but make a brand that you enjoy the taste of (and I personally recommend using European butter!).
    • Honey. Again, ingredient quality matters! Make sure youโ€™re using a honey that tastes good to you. Many people prefer the taste of wildflower honey over clover honey.
    • Finely ground sea salt. Salt helps to balance the flavor so itโ€™s not too sweet. As with many of my recipes, I prefer to use unsalted butter and then add the salt to taste, it gives us the best control over the flavor.

SAMโ€™S TIP: Sea salt adds the best flavor, but in a pinch you can substitute an equal amount of regular table salt.

This is just an overview of the ingredients I used and why. For the full printable recipe (with amounts!) please scroll down to the bottom of the post!

    How to Make Honey Butter

Butter and honey mixed with an electric hand mixer.
Butter, honey, and salt creamed together with an electric mixer
    1. Add the butter to a mixing bowl and beat until creamy.
    2. Add honey and salt and stir again until completely combined. The honey may seem like it doesnโ€™t want to blend at first, just keep mixing!

    Thatโ€™s literally it!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is honey butter good with?

This is good on just about any bread. Serve it on warm, fluffy dinner rolls, a slice of homemade bread, or even on waffles, crepes, or banana bread.

    Should honey butter be refrigerated?

It may be stored (covered) at room temperature for several days, but it will keep much longer in the refrigerator. Just make sure you cover it so it doesnโ€™t absorb any flavors from the fridge.
Note that it will firm up in the refrigerator (just as regular butter does!).

Can I make this into different flavors?

    Yes!
You can turn this into cinnamon honey butter by adding ยฝ-1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (start with ยฝ teaspoon and then add more according to your taste) and ยผ teaspoon vanilla extract.
You can also make a maple butter by replacing the honey with โ…“ cup (80ml) of maple syrup; it would taste great on a batch of my buttermilk pancakes.

Can I use salted butter as that is all I have? I would not use the salt as stated in the recipe.

Iโ€™m going to make the honey butter to put on the homemade biscuit recipe also in your recipes. I have a question. If I freeze the honey butter after I make it, can I use that recipe in the biscuit recipe? Thanks for all the great ideas

Hi Leann! That is an interesting idea, Iโ€™m truly not sure how it would work because when you add the honey you are adding more liquid into the dough, it could work it sounds like it could be delicious but the biscuits may not have quite the same structure as they would just using butter. ๐Ÿ™‚
